Autumn Walks in Wales

Zip your coat and get ready to take in the burnt orange hues that paint the Welsh countryside. Discover wildlife, ancient trees and woodland walks as you walk across Wales.

The very best time to ramble across the bryniau (hills) and cross small afonydd (rivers) as you take in the breathtaking views Wales has to offer during the fall months.

Walk Across Wales in the North

These must-do walks are all within an hour from the County Hotel and the Marine Hotel in North Wales. Spend a few days admiring the change of season across the native landscape on these walks;

Menai Strait

Discover the secret walled woodland that is Glan Faenol across a moderate 1.5 mile walk of between an hour and an hour and a half.

This walk is dog friendly and offers spectacular views of the menai strait where you may spot a seal as you walk along the coast. There are a plethora of wildlife and birds to identify along the route as well as a lovely picnic spot!

Dinas Emrys

Steeped in mythical mystery, Dinas Emrys is where a castle was due to be built but kept crumbling in the foundation stages. Merlin claimed that this kept happening because there were two dragons fighting beneath the land so King Vortigern dug down and released them before building his castle and naming it after Merlin as thanks for his insight.

This 2.2 mile trail will take you through oak woodlands and beautiful waterfalls to the summit where you will find the remnants of Dinas Emrys. The route takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours.

Dolmelynllyn Estate

Enjoy this 4 hour ramble of 4 miles that showcases the spectacular Rhaeadr Ddu Falls. Well known as being a source of inspiration for various artists and writers over the years. This dog friendly trail will lead you past what remains of Cefn Coch gold mine, a must see.

There is also a stretch along the river which highlights the landscape beautifully – a definite when you’re in North Wales!

Nant Gwyant

Experience the true beauty of autumn when you walk the Nant Gwyant trail. Spend up to 3 hours on this 3.8 mile route that takes you through ancient oak woodland with showstopping colour shifts, a multitude of interesting fungi and the remains of Cwm Llan house where you may catch a glimpse of the feral goats dancing on the hillside.

Walk Across Wales in the South

When you visit the Imperial Tenby, don’t neglect the trails offering you the opportunity to walk across Wales in the south. There are several walks within an hour from The Imperial Hotel Tenby you can’t miss such as;

Capability Brown Walk

This 1.5 mile walk was designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown when he visited Dinefwr in 1775. You will cast your eyes upon nearly 300 ancient trees as you meander through this pocket of countryside where you might catch a view of impressive antlers during the rutting that occurs over autumn.

Marloes Peninsula

When in Tenby, a coastal walk must be on your to do list! This 4 mile route takes approximately 2 hours and takes you through the beautiful heathland peninsula. Keep your eyes open for the variety of wildlife that resides here such as seals, seabirds and porpoises. Bring along your four legged friends because they’re welcome on this autumn walk!
