The Best Things to Do in Eastbourne

8 December 2022

Eastbourne is one of the UK’s most popular resort towns. Situated on the seafront in East Sussex, the town is well-known for its traditional pier and seaside amusements.

Venture into Eastbourne itself and you’ll find plenty to see and do, from museums and galleries to beautiful parks and nature reserves. Seasonal activities entertain tourists and locals throughout the year, and the town’s bars and restaurants are not to be missed.

If you’re travelling to Eastbourne soon, or you’re thinking about planning a trip to the seaside in the future, take a look at some of our top tips for weekend breaks and holidays in Eastbourne.

Eastbourne Pier

No seaside town would be complete without a pier, and Eastbourne doesn’t disappoint here!

Eastbourne Pier is a great destination for days out on the seafront. Take a walk down the pier and you’ll find plenty to amuse visitors of all ages. Choose from traditional tea rooms, shops and cafes, indulge at the classic chippy, or just sit back and relax outside the pier’s coffee shop.

Eastbourne Redoubt

History fans will love an afternoon at Eastbourne Redoubt, the circular defence fort in the heart of Eastbourne.

The fortress was constructed in 1805 to protect the town and its surrounding areas from the threat of invasion during the Napoleonic Wars.

Eastbourne Redoubt is now open to the public. Visitors are welcomed from April to mid-November, from 10am to 5pm. Find out more about the fortress here

Treasure Island Eastbourne

The young and the young at heart will love Treasure Island, Eastbourne’s pirate-themed adventure park. There are all kinds of outdoor and indoor amusements to enjoy here, from the Buccaneers indoor adventure to pirates adventure golf.

Treasure Island is the perfect place to enjoy a summer’s afternoon, but it’s equally good if you’re looking for something to do on a wet and windy day. Visit the Treasure Island website to find out more about what to expect.

Princes Park

Princes Park is the perfect destination for spring and summer days. The Eastbourne favourite is well known amongst locals, and we highly recommend taking a trip here if you have young children to entertain.

At Princes Park you’ll find a children’s playground, a boating lake, informal gardens and a beautiful scented rose garden. There’s also a cafe where you can buy all kinds of refreshments to enjoy as you wander the gardens.

Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway

If you’re visiting Eastbourne during the summer, don’t miss the Miniature Steam Railway

The railway opens in April each year, and takes visitors on a mile-long trip around a stunning country park. All locomotives at the miniature railway are built to one-eighth scale, making them perfect for young train enthusiasts!

Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway also has a maze and an adventure playground, along with a smaller play area specifically for under fives. Adults will love the railway-themed cafe, where you can grab a delicious cream tea.

Pevensey Castle

Just a stone’s throw from the heart of Eastbourne, Pevensey Castle is well worth a visit. The historic ruin is now an English Heritage site, and there’s plenty to explore here.

Pevensey Castle dates back to the 4th century. It’s an example of one of the few remaining Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ forts. The castle was also used during the Second World War as a stronghold. Evidence of this era can still be seen in the machine gun posts dotted along the castle’s walls.

Entry to Pevensey Castle is free for English Heritage members, but if you don’t have a membership you can book a ticket online or simply pay for entry on the day. Take a look at the English Heritage website for more details on how to plan your visit.

Towner Eastbourne

In 2020, Towner Eastbourne was named Art Fund’s Museum of the Year. The contemporary art gallery offers something completely different, with a wide range of exhibitions and events taking place throughout the year.

You’ll find work by a huge range of artists here, with some amazing examples of modern and contemporary art to enjoy. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday. View the gallery’s exhibition listings to find out what’s on while you’re in Eastbourne.
