The UK is home to some brilliant family-friendly holiday destinations.

Families looking for affordable, action-packed breaks have plenty of great destinations to choose from, with everything from seaside breaks to historical cities thrown into the mix.

If you’re looking for inspiration for your next trip, take a look at our guide to the best holiday destinations in the UK for families.

1. The Highlands, Scotland

The Scottish Highlands are one of the world’s most exciting destinations, and they happen to be quite budget friendly too.

Loch Ness is not to be missed, so make sure you take a trip to the Loch to see if you can spot Nessie. Visitors can even go dolphin spotting at Moray Firth, and if you’re feeling adventurous you could incorporate a day’s climbing at Ben Nevis.

Look out for last minute deals on accommodation in the heart of the highlands, then start planning some unbeatable days out.

2. Somerset

Well known for landmarks including Cheddar Gorge and Wells Cathedral, Somerset is another of our recommended choices for budget-friendly breaks. The region has some amazing beaches and beautiful natural woods where you can plan affordable days out that don’t compromise on entertainment.

There are plenty of free attractions in Somerset. Why not visit the Museum of Somerset to learn more about the history of the area?

If you’re interested in local wildlife don’t miss the Willows and Wetlands Visitor Centre. We’d also highly recommend the Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park.

3. Scarborough, North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is well known for its holiday destinations, many offering budget-friendly options at any time of the year. There are plenty of family-friendly seaside resorts in the region, but one of our favourite destinations in North Yorkshire has got to be Scarborough.

Families flock to Scarborough beach during the summer months, but the area is also popular during Autumn and Winter when you can enjoy historical attractions like Scarborough Castle.

4. Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is famed as a great holiday destination, but you might be surprised to hear that it’s also brilliantly budget-friendly.

The Needles Landmark Attraction is perfect for family days out, and no trip to the Isle of Wight would be complete without an afternoon’s fossil hunting on Yaverland Beach.

Plan a break here and make the most of some of the free and affordable attractions on the island, and you’ll have the makings of a great holiday.

5. East Sussex, South Coast

You don’t need to travel abroad for a good chance of sunshine this year. Instead, book a break on the South Coast and you’ll likely be treated to some of the best weather the UK has to offer.

East Sussex is perfect for budget-friendly escapes, and there’s plenty to see and do in the area. Enjoy a day out in Brighton, explore the local beaches or head to Knockhatch Adventure Park for water slides, a petting farm and an owl sanctuary.

6. Whitby, North Yorkshire

Whitby is famed for its sandy beaches, where brightly coloured beach huts line the bays. There are several great beaches in the area, perfect for wallet-friendly days out during the summer months.

Take a trip to the famous Whitby Beach, or explore lesser-known hidden gems nearby, like Tate Hill and West Cliff, where children can enjoy the paddling pool and donkey rides.

There are other interesting attractions in the area too. Take the ruined  Gothic Whitby Abbey, for example. Did you know it inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula?

7. Exmouth, Devon

Devon is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. It’s well worth exploring if you’re planning an affordable escape this year. There’s never any shortage of things to do, no matter what you’re looking for.

Dinosaur enthusiasts will love hunting for prehistoric finds on the famous Jurassic Coast, which spans 96 miles from Exmouth to Dorset’s Studland Bay. Other top attractions in the area include Exmouth Museum and the famous 16-sided 1790s house, A La Ronde.

8. Torquay, Devon

Torquay is perhaps best known for its charming harbour and beautiful beaches, so it’s a great spot for summer holidays in the UK. This year, why not head to Torquay to enjoy all that the Great British seaside has to offer.

Torquay boasts everything from a zoo and waterpark to stunning country parks and even the Babbacombe Model Village. Explore the prehistoric caves of Kents Cavern or just spend a few days unwinding on the beach.

9. Norfolk

There are over 90 miles of picturesque coast in Norfolk, which makes it one of the best family holiday destinations in the UK. It’s perfect for budget-friendly tips, too, as there are plenty of affordable seaside resorts in the area.

Head to Great Yarmouth and Hunstanton for family fun, or plan a weekend in the city of Norwich. Norfolk is as diverse as it is exciting, and that’s why it’s one of our most popular destinations amongst families.

10. Peak District, Cumbria

UK family holiday destinations don’t get much better than the Peak District. Perfect for lovers of the outdoors, the Peak District is well suited to family breaks. And it’s affordable too, with great budget-friendly accommodation for families in the area.

Bakewell, the birthplace of the Bakewell Tart, is a beautifully picturesque village to explore here, as is the historic Eyam Plague Village. Other top Peak District attractions include Peak Cavern, Hathersage and Stanage Edge.
