There are few places more magical to explore than the Lake District.
The Lake District is renowned for its dramatic scenery, literary heritage and spectacular trails. Boasting glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fells and quintessential market towns – it has a knack for stealing hearts.
Beatrix Potter’s favourite place and the birthplace of Peter Rabbit, the Lake District has gifted us with so much. It is a gift that keeps on giving thanks to the beautiful scenery, lakes and exciting hikes available!
Here are our 5 absolute favourite spots;
This beast of a lake is ten and a half miles long and over 200 ft deep. Windermere is England’s largest lake and offers some of the most encompassing views of the Lake District.
A boat trip is the perfect way to see the area from a fresh perspective although you can also kayak, paddleboard and more should you prefer to get a little active. Near the jetty there is a museum of Victorian and Edwardian steam launches and historic boats to take you on a journey into the lake’s history.
William Wordswoth wandered here and it inspired some of his most well known poetry particularly “lonely as a cloud”. A short 30 minute walk from the carpark through woodland to experience this thundering waterfall.
Aira Forces Fall is 70 ft and can also be reached via the alternative Gowbarrow Fell trail should you fancy a bit more of a challenge!
If you are a rambling loving, hike seeking individual then Great Langdale is the place for you. Surrounded by famous peaks such as Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and Langdale Pikes, this valley offers some of the best hiking trails around.
Pavey Ark is a cliff-face that rises up to 2297 ft but can be climbed with ease if you approach it from behind. If you are seeking a thrill then you can take the more demanding route up the Jack’s Rake cleft.
Whichever way you choose to go, the rewards at the top are unforgettable.
Rescued in 1996 and in full operation, Honister is where you will find England’s last working slate mine. Take a mine tour to experience the narrow tunnels and cavernous pits.
Slate has been quarried here since Elizabethan times and you can now get a taste of history coupled with canyoning activities in the surrounding mountains. The main attraction is the Via Ferrata which is a climbing experience that uses a system established in the Italian Dolomites using a permanently fixed cableway and clip on harness.
There is a jump across a 2000 ft chasm to get your blood pumping!
Derwentwater is one of the most magnificent lakes in the district because of its floating forests. These islands give the lake a certain mystery and the most alluring one of them all is St Herbert’s Island.
Situated right in the middle of the lake, St Herbert’s island is the largest island with an area of 5 acres. Named after a 7th century hermit who brought christianity for the island and the inspiration for Beatrix Potter’s owl island.
