Whitby Beach offers something for all holiday-makers – paddling, swimming, rock-pools and spectacular vistas all around. But there are also wonderful sandy beaches all along the Yorkshire coast. Look out for Robin Hood’s Bay – a picturesque fishing village just a few miles along the coast, or Runswick Bay.

Captain Cook Memorial Museum 0.5 Mile

The museum is in the 17th-century house on Whitby’s harbourside where James Cook lived as a young apprentice, before embarking on his epic journey of discovery. The museum hosts a large collection of pieces relating to Captain Cook, including his own letters, which describe some of the events he witnessed on his first voyage.

Known as the ‘Museum of Treasures’, Whitby Museum and Art Gallery is in the wonderfully maintained gardens of Pannett Park in the centre of Whitby.

Whitby Abbey 1 Mile

Best known as the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Whitby Abbey is a former Christian monastery and Benedictine Abbey, which now stands in ruin on the cliffs overlooking Whitby and the Northern Sea.

Whitby Golf Club 1.5 Miles

This 72-hole course is ideal type for all levels of golfers, as it is neither too long or difficult, but you need to be accurate on all holes to avoid some of the more interesting hazards up near the clifftops just a mile from the centre of town. Visitors welcome.

Farsyde Riding Centre 8 Miles

Excellent horse-riding facilities for all ages and abilities, from novice riders through to the fully experienced rider. Capable riders can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Yorkshire Coastline, the North York Moors, local forestry and countryside, including a scenic former railway track to Scarborough, where you’ll have views of Scarborough Castle and, on a clear day, Flamborough Head.
