Bailiffgate\u2019s journey through history is remarkable. Once the Duke of Northumberland\u2019s Commissioner\u2019s house, it later transformed in 1903 into a school dedicated to training girls in \u2018sewing, knitting, darning and other household work\u2019\u2014preparing them for lives as domestic servants, wives, and mothers.<\/p>\n

Today, as a luxury 5-star hotel, Bailiffgate is a place of comfort and relaxation\u2014a world away from its past. Yet, we honour its history, naming our private dining room after its formidable first headmistress, Mrs Bowmaker\u2014renowned for her strict austerity\u2014while the Commissioner\u2019s Bar pays tribute to its former inhabitants.<\/p>\n
